When Johan Vansummeren won the 2011 Paris-Roubaix, he followed in the footsteps of Fabian Cancellara and Stuart O'Grady who won on the same grueling cobblestones using the R3. In fact the R3 has been on the podium of the world's toughest race every year since it was first launched in 2006.

To this day, the R3 is engineered to optimize strength, stiffness and comfort while offering low weight in every situation. Built on the lessons learned at Project California, the Smartwall optimized second generation Squoval tubes place material where it is needed most, and remove it where it is not. Cervelo includes the Cervelo optimized 1 3/8" steer tube taper for confidence when descending and cornering, BBrightTM to increase bottom bracket stiffness to new levels, and maintain comfort by using thinner than ever lightweight seat stays.

Available in either the base model R3 or the lighter R3 Team, this bicycle has become a staple for Team Garmin-Cervelo riders, and it could be yours.

BBright:

Squoval
- Square tubes have more material far from the neutral axis which reduces side-to-side flex

- Round tubes resist torsion better

- Squoval has both:

• Lots of material far from the neutral axis
• Convex walls & rounded corners improve torsional stiffness & prevent denting and buckling

Smartwall for Carbon
- Carbon strength & stiffness depend on the size, shape, material & fiber direction of each of the 300+ pieces of carbon in a frame

- Cervelo's Smartwall lay-ups are based on 15 years experience and the most advanced tools, including in-house developed optimization software

- Smartwall also puts extra carbon on the sides (far from the center plane) to increase stiffness at little extra weight.


Optimized Headtube Taper
- Many standards exist for the lower headset size: 1 1/8", 1 1/4", 1 3/8", 1 1/2"

- Best size depends on stiffness, strength, weight, and aero demands.

- Cervelo's R&D shows that for non-aero frames. 1 3/8" is ideal

• Smaller leads to less stiffness for the same weight
• Bigger leads to less comfort and less stength in frontal impact

Front Boomerang Construction
- The size of a complete 1-piece front triangle adds complexity to the layuo (many carbon plies in one mold)

- Separate toptubes, headtubes and downtubes lead to discontinuous fibers, lowering impact strength

- Boomerang is small enough to handle and allows for continuous fibers from toptube to headtube to dowtube


Ultra-Thin Seatstays
- Cervelo pioneered the ultra-thin seatstays on carbon frames.

- They are vertically compliant and vibration absorbing (keeping in mind the frame only plays a minor role in comfort)

- Due to their small cross section they are also extremely light

Minimalist Front Derailleur Mount
- Minimalist Design: 4.8 grams

- The front derailleur mount is fully Di2 Compatible

- The mount incorporates a stiffer design which improves shifting, in particular with SRAM drivetrains.


Reverse Seattube Collar
- Minimalist design: 8 grams

- Sitting loads push the seatpost rearwards, putting high stresses on the slot and clamp bolt of standard rear-slotted seattubes.

- The front slot and pinch alleviate this stress and increase longevity

- Seattube is flattened in the rear to make incorrect assembly of the seattube collar impossible


Single Bend Cable Routing
- The straight line from downtube cable stop to chainstay cable stop for the rear derailleur is evident

- Thus the cable only bends in one location and one direction for minimal friction (extra important for the newer drivetrain systems)

- The front derailleur cable also has a single-bend path
